Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in people over 40, but symptoms can be hard to spot.

Cataract is an aging eye disease. When the lens - a transparent lens - becomes cloudy, light cannot pass through to the fundus membrane and the patient will have blurred vision, and if the lens is completely cloudy, the patient will go blind.

Blurred vision:When you have a cataract, you may experience partial blurring or reduced vision. Cataracts have little effect on your vision at first. Blurred vision can have many causes, but as the cataract progresses, your vision will gradually decrease. This sign can be difficult to distinguish from other conditions such as glaucoma, so you should consult an eye doctor if you notice these changes.

Color vision loss:The color may become less noticeable over time. This happens slowly, so most patients will not notice the color change until after cataract surgery.

Sensitivity to light and glare:You may find that previously comfortable lighting is now uncomfortable and glaring. Because cataracts scatter more light entering the eye, optometrists say this symptom is common.

Difficulty driving at night:Because cataracts make it difficult to balance the contrast between darkness and bright lights from oncoming cars, most people with cataracts will have trouble driving at night.

Cannot read small print:The lens inside the eye is like a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina and allowing us to see things clearly, both near and far. The lens is mostly water and protein, the protein is arranged in a way that allows light to pass through it. As cataracts cause the protein to clump together, small print can become difficult to distinguish in the eye's reflection.

Diplopia:Diffraction from cataracts can cause you to see two, three, or more things. As the cataract gets worse, this symptom may disappear. Other conditions that can cause this symptom include brain tumors, corneal swelling, multiple sclerosis, and stroke.

Continuous glass replacement:If you frequently have to change your prescription, you may have cataracts. This is because changing your prescription glasses will not correct the vision loss. You should see a doctor immediately if this happens.
