Are wasps poisonous?

The scientific name of the ground wasp is Vespa nigrithorax, also known as the wasp, is larger, has a black body, yellow dots, a brown abdomen, and a head and thorax with many yellow-brown hairs. The antennae are light brown, smooth, and hairless. They usually nest in bushes, close to the ground in rotten wood.

Hornets are a nightmare for humans because of their ability to kill in the blink of an eye. Nicknamed “killer bees” because of their dangerous venom and ferocity, this species also has behaviors that scientists call genocide bees.

Bee venom contains many extremely toxic substances such as melittin, apamin, phospholipase A2, phospholipase B, mast cell disruptor, hyaluronidase, histamine, dopamine,... the main components of which are melittin and phospholipase A2. Melittin is a substance that causes pain in the person being stung and is more dangerous because it causes blood thinning and blood clotting disorders. Apamine is a compound that can paralyze the nervous system and muscle activity, even causing respiratory failure, nerve paralysis and death.

What to do when stung by a bee

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Ta Anh Tuan - Head of the Department of Internal Medicine Intensive Care, National Children's Hospital, bee stings are common accidents in children, especially those living in rural areas and ethnic minority areas. Depending on the species of bee, the venom will be more or less toxic, some are almost non-toxic (honey bees) but there are also types that can cause death with only 10 stings such as hornets, wasps, and hornets.

To avoid serious consequences, when children are stung by bees, parents need to calmly handle the situation, quickly move the child to a safe area to avoid further stings. Then, practice the following steps:

If the stinger is protruding above the skin surface, try removing it with tweezers. Do not attempt to remove the stinger by squeezing the wound.

Wash the burned area with soap and cold water. If possible, disinfect with rubbing alcohol or an antiseptic solution.

Apply cold water or an ice pack to the burned area for about 10 minutes.

In case the child has one of the following signs: multiple stings; stings on the head, face, neck, accompanied by rapidly spreading edema or fever, fatigue, difficulty breathing, decreasing urine output, urine red as blood, signs of allergy or previous allergy to bee stings, itching, red skin all over the body or feeling dizzy, lightheaded, it is necessary to immediately take the child to the nearest medical facility for timely emergency care, do not delay to perform first aid steps at home.

Children should be taken to the nearest medical facility after being stung by a bee to avoid further danger.
