Are ground bees venomous?
The ground wasp, scientifically known as Vespa nigrithorax, is also called the hornet. It is larger than a typical ground wasp, with a black body, yellow spots, a brown abdomen, and a head and thorax covered in many yellowish-brown hairs. Its antennae are light brown, smooth, and hairless. It usually builds its nests in bushes, close to the ground, within decaying wood.
Ground bees are a nightmare for humans because of their ability to kill in the blink of an eye. Dubbed "killer bees" for their dangerous venom and ferocity, this species also exhibits behaviors that scientists call genocidal bees.
Bee venom contains many highly toxic substances such as melittin, apamin, phospholipase A2, phospholipase B, mast cell disruptors, hyaluronidase, histamine, dopamine, etc., with melittin and phospholipase A2 being the main components. Melittin causes pain in those stung and is more dangerous because it causes hemolysis and blood clotting disorders. Apamine is a compound that can paralyze the nervous system and muscle activity, even causing respiratory failure, nerve paralysis, and death.
What to do when you get stung by a bee?
According to Associate Professor Dr. Ta Anh Tuan, Head of the Intensive Care Unit of the National Children's Hospital, bee stings are a common accident among children, especially those living in rural and ethnic minority areas. Depending on the species of bee, the venom can be mild or potent; some are almost non-toxic (honey bees), while others can be fatal with just 10 stings, such as wasps, hornets, and bumblebees.
To avoid serious consequences, when a child is stung by a bee, parents need to remain calm and quickly move the child to a safe area to prevent further stings. Then, follow these steps:
If the stinger protrudes from the skin, try removing it with tweezers; do not attempt to remove the stinger by squeezing the wound.
Wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and cold water. If possible, disinfect with rubbing alcohol or an antiseptic solution.
Apply a cold compress to the affected area using cold water or an ice pack for about 10 minutes.
If a child exhibits any of the following signs: multiple stings; stings on the head, face, or neck accompanied by rapidly spreading swelling or fever, fatigue, difficulty breathing, decreased urine output, blood-red urine, signs of an allergic reaction or a history of bee sting allergies, itching, generalized redness of the skin, or dizziness, the child should be immediately taken to the nearest medical facility for prompt emergency treatment. Do not delay in performing first aid at home.
