7 parenting ideas that seem right but are actually outdated
Instead of asking your children to save, teach them how to manage their personal finances.
Do you often wonder if your current parenting methods are effective? Most people follow the same principles that their parents taught them, such as: "Study hard", "Be responsible" and "You will be a leader if you work hard"...
Most of the advice from elders is useful for our children but just being "right" is not "enough" in the present.
1. "You have to save money"
The advice given to us by our parents and grandparents seems to have lost much of its meaning these days. You can save money for a short period of time, while a long-term savings account in the bank is not a wise way to go. On the contrary, you can get better results if you know how to use your money wisely.
In modern life, money should be invested in profitable items, and not everyone knows how to do it. Therefore, parents should tell their children about the importance of basic personal financial planning and guide them on how to do it. This is useful for everyone.
2. "If you want to do something, do it as well as you can."
This is one of the most common pieces of advice that people hear from generation to generation. But if we look at a student’s day, we will see that they have too much to do. And the only way to make it work is to decide what to do well, what to review, and what to cheat on.
The skill of "effort division" is really useful in adult life when you have to arrange a balanced time for work, family, hobbies and other important things.
3. "You have to work hard to achieve success"
You say things like that but the child looks at other examples like Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs and other successful people who didn’t have to endure a lot of things they hated to achieve their goals. They just did what they wanted, pursued their ideas and got amazing results. Besides, there are also people who didn’t have to work hard but succeeded based on luck.
Success and hard work are not synonymous - in fact, they are opposites: The more you work in a place you don't like, the lower your chances of success.
4. "You have to accumulate a lot of knowledge"
Not knowing who Anne Frank is will not affect your child’s future. In fact, this information can be found quickly on the Internet. However, knowing how to find that information quickly, checking its accuracy, and managing time are skills that parents need to teach their children. General knowledge is great but rarely applies to real life.
5. Must do work that can be relied upon
Many children's dreams are stunted by this principle. Some parents often say: "Books and poetry? That's silly. An accountant is more valuable." But in 10-15 years the necessity and importance of a career can change. Only those who are flexible to changes will achieve success.
6. Career advancement is an indicator of success
Many people do not know that there are careers that develop not only vertically (from worker to manager, director...) but also horizontally. People who are famous online for their sewing, painting, carpentry skills... are typical examples.
Nowadays, any hobby can be turned into a career and personal development is one of the most important things for a career. If a child dislikes math but is good at drawing, we can encourage them to pursue their passion instead of hiring a math teacher or tutor.
7. You are always the best
You are not your child’s bodyguard. If you want them to be independent, let them make their own decisions and take care of themselves to the best of their ability. When you pamper your child too much, they will not be able to face reality and will not know how to overcome difficulties.
