77 countries and territories participate in the International Chemistry Olympiad.
This information was provided by Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Vinh Hien, Head of the Steering Committee for the 46th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 46) in Vietnam, at the opening ceremony of IChO 46, organized by the University of Science (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) in collaboration with Hanoi Pedagogical University on the morning of July 21st in Hanoi.
Attending the opening ceremony were: Mr. Pham Vu Luan, Minister of Education and Training; Professor Peter Wothers, President of the International Chemistry Olympiad Committee; and representatives from the embassies of countries with students participating in IChO 46 in Vietnam.

This year marks the first time Vietnam has hosted the 46th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). The competition took place from July 20th to 29th, attracting 291 students from 77 countries and territories. The Vietnamese delegation participating in IChO 2014 consisted of four students, all majoring in Chemistry: Pham Ngan Giang and Pham Mai Phuong from Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for Gifted Students; Do Viet Hung from Tran Phu High School for Gifted Students in Hai Phong; and Doan Quoc Hoai Nam from Quoc Hoc High School for Gifted Students in Hue.
Commenting on the student delegation participating in the 2014 IChO exam, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Ha, Head of the Chemistry Department, Hanoi Pedagogical University, and one of the four leaders of the gifted student delegation, said that all four students had a fairly similar level of ability and many outstanding advantages such as: intelligence, a solid grasp of knowledge, and a thirst for learning.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Associate Professor Bui Duy Cam, Head of the Organizing Committee of IChO 2014, said that the 46th IChO is an opportunity for young people from 77 countries and territories to demonstrate their creative abilities in chemistry. It is also an opportunity to exchange ideas, learn from each other, and strengthen international relations in the field of education and friendship between nations.
Schedule of activities for the International Chemistry Olympiad in Vietnam
* On July 21, 2014 (10:00 AM - 12:00 PM), at the National Convention Center (No. 1 Pham Hung Street, Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi): Opening Ceremony of IChO 46;
* On July 23, 2014 (from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM), at Hanoi Pedagogical University (136 Xuan Thuy Street, Cau Giay District, Hanoi): Practical exam;
* On July 25, 2014 (from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM), at the National Convention Center (No. 1 Pham Hung Street, Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi): Theoretical exam;
* On July 28, 2014 (3:00 PM - 6:00 PM), at the National Convention Center (1 Pham Hung Street, Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi): Closing Ceremony of IChO 46.
