78 hours of police battle with the woman who killed her best friend

In the early morning of December 18, Luc Nam District Police, Bac Giang received a report that Ms. Vu Thi Nga (39 years old) was murdered and robbed. The person accompanying Ms. Nga at the time, Tran Thi Them (36 years old), was lucky to escape.

The crime scene was a trail in the middle of a field in Ho Truc village (Cam Ly commune), far from residential areas. Ms. Them said that at around 3 a.m., she and Ms. Nga went to buy fish at the night market to sell. When they arrived at Cam Ly commune, two young men on a motorbike blocked the road and robbed their handbags.

Ms. Nga shouted because she was robbed of another pair of earrings. The two robbers then returned to attack and stabbed her to death. Only Them escaped and ran back to call for help.

Determining that this was a murder case with signs of complexity, the Criminal Police Department of Bac Giang Province Police stepped in. The police determined that Ms. Nga was murdered and her property was lost as reported. However, Ms. Them's testimony did not match the traces at the scene that the investigation agency collected.

An investigator doubted Them’s testimony that when the robbers rushed to kill Nga, she threw her bag to them to save her life. The police said this was impossible, in the middle of a deserted field, how could the perpetrator let the witness escape. On the other hand, from 3:20 a.m. until the murder, there was only one call from Them to the victim, not a call from the fish seller as stated.

When summoned to the police station, Them suddenly used an iron pipe attached to a broom handle to poke her throat so she could not speak. She was taken to the emergency room immediately afterwards and her life was not in danger.

At 10:00 a.m. on December 21, Them pleaded guilty.

The female suspect said that she went to have her molars pulled, which led to headaches and insomnia. When she slept, she often felt like someone was waking her up and urging her to do bad things. She then went to see a fortune teller and was told that she had to go home and perform a ceremony to be freed because her husband's family had many early deaths.

On December 12, she went to her husband's brother's house to steal a knife and planned to kill someone. She couldn't bear to kill her sister so she targeted her best friend.

On the afternoon of December 17, Them invited Nga to go to the neighboring commune to buy fish to sell. At around 3:25 a.m. on December 18, when they reached the field in Ho Truc village, Them stopped the car and pretended to call the fish seller to gain her trust. Taking advantage of Nga's carelessness, Them took out a knife and killed her.

After committing the crime, the female suspect snatched Nga's earrings and threw them into the lake along with the murder knife. She then returned to the scene, took Nga's phone and threw it into the lake along with her own phone. After setting up the fake scene, she returned home and reported that she had been robbed and murdered.

The police then mobilized 20 officers to coordinate with local authorities to search for the knife used in the crime. Even using a metal detector still yielded no results, so the investigators continued to fight with Them. She then gave more specific information about where she threw the knife and a day later the murder weapon was found.
