On the morning of May 18, the Party Central Committee, the National Assembly, the President, the Government, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front and Hanoi City solemnly organized the ceremony to celebrate the 130th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh (May 19, 1890 - May 19, 2020).

In his opening speech, General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong emphasized that President Ho Chi Minh's 79 springs of life are the most beautiful symbol of patriotism and Vietnamese revolutionary heroism. He is a shining crystallization of the morality, intelligence, spirit and conscience of the nation and the era.

According to the General Secretary, under the leadership of the Party, headed by leader Ho Chi Minh, our people rose up to break the shackles of slavery of more than 80 years of the colonial regime, abolished the feudal regime that lasted for thousands of years, established the Democratic Republic of Vietnam - the first people's democratic state in Southeast Asia, opening a new, most brilliant era in the glorious history of the nation - the Ho Chi Minh era.

After the victory of the August Revolution, internal and external enemies conspired to overthrow the young revolutionary government, hoping to impose their rule over our country once again. Faced with this dangerous situation, President Ho Chi Minh and our Party led the entire people to fight against three enemies at the same time: "hunger", "ignorance" and "foreign invaders".

With clever and flexible strategies, he steered the Vietnamese revolutionary boat through all rapids and dangers, in "critical" situations, taking advantage of time to build up forces in all aspects, while trying to protect and consolidate the newly established, still very young revolutionary government.

The head of the Party and State reiterated President Ho Chi Minh's call for national resistance, which called on the entire nation to unite and join forces to carry out a long-term resistance war, with an iron will: "We would rather sacrifice everything than lose our country, than become slaves."

Under the correct leadership of the Party, following the banner of "resistance and nation building" by Ho Chi Minh, our army and people have successively defeated the enemy's military plans, culminating in the historic Dien Bien Phu Victory "resounding throughout the five continents, shaking the earth".

After the successful end of the resistance war against French colonialism, the North was completely liberated, our people entered a new revolutionary period, simultaneously carrying out two strategic tasks: Building socialism in the North and continuing to fight to complete the people's national democratic revolution in the South.

The country has never had the foundation, potential and position it has today.

The General Secretary in his speech clearly stated that national unification was the burning desire and constant concern of President Ho Chi Minh. He once said: "Vietnam is one, the Vietnamese people are one. Rivers may dry up, mountains may erode away, but that truth will never change!"

Before passing away, he left the entire Party and people a historic Testament, in which he affirmed a strong will, an iron determination and a belief in certain victory: "No matter how difficult or arduous, our people will definitely be completely victorious. The American imperialists must get out of our country. Our Fatherland will definitely be unified. Our compatriots in the North and the South will definitely be reunited under one roof."

Referring to Ho Chi Minh's thought, the General Secretary affirmed that it is a system of comprehensive and profound viewpoints on fundamental issues of the Vietnamese revolution; the result of a process of creatively applying and developing Marxism-Leninism to the specific conditions of our country, inheriting and developing the nation's fine traditional values, and absorbing the quintessence of human culture.

This is also an extremely great and precious spiritual asset of our Party and people, forever illuminating the revolutionary cause of our Party and people from one victory to another; contributing to the common struggle of peoples in the world, for peace, national independence, democracy and social progress.

General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Standing member of the Secretariat Tran Quoc Vuong and many other senior leaders and former leaders attended the ceremony.

As the founder and trainer of our Party, President Ho Chi Minh always paid special attention to Party building work, so that our Party would be truly clean, strong, and truly a genuine revolutionary Party, with ethics and civilization.

In his Testament, he advised to strive to preserve and strengthen the Party's unity and solidarity: "Solidarity is an extremely precious tradition of the Party and our people."

He also pointed out: Our country is a democratic country, all benefits are for the people, all powers are in the hands of the people; democracy is the most precious thing in life for the people; widely practicing democracy is the universal key to solving all tasks, overcoming all difficulties, we must listen to the voice of the people, take the people as the root, "use the people's talent and strength to benefit the people".

According to the head of the Party and State, President Ho Chi Minh is a shining example of revolutionary ethics. He is a symbol of will, determination and tireless efforts to overcome all difficulties and challenges.

He always set a shining example of steadfastness, mettle, and absolute loyalty to revolutionary goals and ideals; an example of being close to the people, trusting the people, loving and respecting the people, wholeheartedly serving the Fatherland and the people; being diligent, thrifty, honest, impartial, and selfless.

He is the embodiment of the Vietnamese spirit of tolerance and humanity; a symbol of noble revolutionary morality, pure and loyal international spirit, and a messenger of peace and friendship among nations.

“Ho Chi Minh’s noble revolutionary moral qualities did not come naturally. They were the result of a continuous process of self-cultivation, self-training and self-improvement,” the General Secretary emphasized. Therefore, he always advised cadres and party members to constantly cultivate and train themselves in morality to become exemplary revolutionary soldiers.

President Ho Chi Minh was also the embodiment of a simple, pure lifestyle, loved work, despised luxury, and had no desire for fame or wealth for himself. His whole life was devoted to only one purpose: "fighting for the interests of the Fatherland and the happiness of the people."

According to the General Secretary, every victory and every step forward of the Vietnamese revolution is associated with the great contributions of President Ho Chi Minh and the illumination and guidance of Ho Chi Minh's thought.

From a poor and backward country, Vietnam has risen to become a developing country with average income. Reiterating the viewpoint that has been mentioned many times, the General Secretary emphasized: “Our country has never had such a foundation, potential, position and international prestige as it does today; there are more favorable conditions and premises to firmly follow the path that our Party, our people and beloved Uncle Ho have chosen.”

Never be satisfied with performance

According to the General Secretary, the more excited and proud we are, the more we absolutely cannot be complacent or satisfied with the results and achievements we have achieved. Our country is still facing many difficulties and challenges.

In leadership, management, and implementation, we still have many limitations and weaknesses; there are still problems that have not been thoroughly resolved, many bottlenecks that have not been removed; while new requirements, tasks, challenges, and conflicts, and large, complex problems continue to arise.

Hostile forces are always looking for ways to sabotage our people's revolutionary cause; distorting, inciting, and dividing in order to disintegrate our Party and our regime.

Conservatism, stagnation; local thinking, group interests; power degeneration, "self-evolution", "self-transformation", corruption, waste, moral degradation and social responsibility... are also extremely dangerous internal invaders, threatening the leadership role and mission of the Party, the survival of the regime, and the destiny of the country and people.

“Those difficulties, limitations and shortcomings require the entire Party, the entire people and the entire political system to seriously acknowledge them, have greater political determination and strive to overcome them,” said the General Secretary.

The General Secretary noted that it is necessary to continue promoting the tradition of close ties between the Party and the people; rely on the people to build the Party; strive to promote democracy and people's mastery, and maintain solidarity and unity within the Party.

Following Uncle Ho's instructions on "Improving revolutionary ethics, wiping out individualism", the General Secretary reminded that it is necessary to resolutely, persistently and actively purify the Party's ranks, prevent and repel corruption, degradation in political ideology, ethics and lifestyle of cadres and Party members, and the state of "self-evolution" and "self-transformation" within the Party.

“Each cadre and party member must seriously fulfill their responsibility to set an example; the higher the position and the greater the position, especially the heads of agencies and units in the Party and in the government apparatus, the more exemplary they must be in cultivating and training their moral qualities, lifestyle, style, working manners and methods for the masses and people to follow,” the General Secretary reminded.

People-centered

Speaking before thousands of delegates, the General Secretary thoroughly grasped the viewpoint that "people are the root". People are the center and the subject of the innovation process; implementing the correct principle: All policies and strategies must truly originate from the aspirations, rights and legitimate and legal interests of the people; taking the happiness and prosperity of the people as the goal to strive for.

According to the General Secretary, Uncle Ho's teaching "In the sky, nothing is more precious than the people. In the world, nothing is stronger than the united force of the people" is a profound lesson, of extremely important significance when the country is at a historic turning point, needing to mobilize enormous material and spiritual resources to continue to break through and rise up.

Over the past time, amid countless difficulties caused by epidemics and natural disasters, we have become more deeply aware of the good nature of our regime, of the political system in our country, the strength of the patriotic tradition, of the will to unite and act in unison of our entire Party, people and army, which have been recognized and highly appreciated by the world.

“Without a political system, a tradition of solidarity, patriotism, and humanity like in Vietnam, we do not know whether the fight against Covid-19 would have achieved the results we have seen. Only love, solidarity, and unity within the entire political system can do that. It does not come naturally, nor is it our luck,” the General Secretary emphasized.

Following Uncle Ho's teachings, the General Secretary reminded that with the current difficulties and challenges, it is necessary to first overcome the negative impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and ensure social security and welfare for the people.

At the same time, we must be proactive and sensitive in seizing opportunities, striving to complete the socio-economic development tasks of 2020 at the highest level; thereby contributing to the successful completion of the socio-economic development tasks of the 12th tenure and the 2011-2020 period; and well prepare and organize party congresses at all levels and the 13th National Congress of the Party.
