A magnitude 7 earthquake shook the resort islands of Bali and Lombok, Indonesia, killing at least 82 people and injuring hundreds.

The head of disaster management at the Indonesian Red Cross, Arifin Muhammad Hadi, confirmed the death toll. He said hundreds of people had been taken to local hospitals and thousands of houses were severely damaged.

The earthquake on the evening of August 5th occurred at a depth of 31 km near Loloan, North of Lombok Island. The aftershocks were also felt in West Bali.

This is the second earthquake to hit Lombok in a week. On July 29, the island was hit by a 6.4 magnitude tremor, killing dozens of people and trapping hundreds of hikers.

Aftershocks ranging from magnitude 4.3 to 5.4 occurred after the magnitude 7 earthquake, the US Geological Survey said.

According to the National Disaster Management Agency, the Indonesian Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami warning, but after the main quake, the agency also lifted the warning.

Indonesia's Tourism Ministry said no tourists were "injured or affected" by the earthquake.

The Indonesian Red Cross said four injured volunteers had been hospitalized. Its staff moved people to higher ground and advised people to leave coastal areas due to tsunami concerns, Arifin said.

Indonesia is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, which stretches 40,000 km from Japan, Indonesia to California, USA. Most of the world's earthquakes occur in this basin due to strong geological and volcanic activity.
