The Vietnam Preventive Medicine Association announced the launch of a free event “HPV Prevention, Cervical Cancer Prevention” on April 15. The event is an opportunity to disseminate knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases and cancers including cervical cancer caused by HPV.

The event started at 8am and ended at 11pm on April 15. Participants had the opportunity to receive three free doses of HPV vaccine at the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City and be picked up and dropped off by Uber taxi (to and from) for their first vaccination. The total number of vaccine doses given was 114 doses (three doses/person for 38 winners). The first HPV vaccination will take place at 9am from April 23 to 25. Subsequent vaccinations will be given two and six months after the first vaccination.

Cervical cancer is a common cancer among women worldwide. Every year, about half a million women in the world are diagnosed with cervical cancer. In Vietnam, every day there are 17 new cases and 9 women die from cervical cancer. In addition to screening for early detection of cervical cancer, the most effective measure to prevent cervical cancer is to get vaccinated against HPV, the main cause of cervical cancer.
