On April 30th, the Hoa Vang District Police (Da Nang) announced that the District Police Investigation Agency had initiated a criminal case and temporarily detained Mai Thanh (born in 1990, residing in Hoa Khuong commune, Hoa Vang district, Da Nang) for the crime of fraud and appropriation of property.
According to the investigation results, taking advantage of the recent "land fever" in suburban areas of Da Nang, Mai Thanh, a young man in his 20s, fabricated stories about owning numerous large plots of land in the suburban areas of Hoa Vang district and then advertised them for sale on various information channels...

The first victim to fall into Mai Thanh's trap was Mr. Lam Thi N. (residing in Thanh Khe district, Da Nang). Around July 2021, Mr. N contacted Thanh, who took him to see a plot of land and claimed he was processing the necessary paperwork for a land use certificate. Trusting him, Mr. N agreed to purchase the fictitious 851m2 plot of land that Thanh claimed for 285 million VND, paying a deposit of 100 million VND. After receiving the deposit, Thanh immediately disappeared, leaving behind promises to complete the transfer of ownership to Mr. N.
Similarly, in December 2021, Thanh contacted Ms. Nguyen Thi Ph (residing in Hai Chau, Da Nang) and also offered to sell plot number 6, map sheet number 15, with an area of 851m2 in Hamlet 5 (Hoa Khuong Commune, Hoa Vang District, Da Nang) for 150 million VND, and the second plot number 18, map sheet number 6, with an area of 2,538m2 in Hamlet 5 (Hoa Khuong Commune, Hoa Vang District) for 800 million VND.
Thành promised Mrs. Phương that if she paid him a deposit of 209 million VND, he would handle the transfer of ownership procedures, and she would receive the remaining amount once the land titles were issued and registered in her name… However, Thành absconded shortly afterward…
Upon receiving the complaint from Ms. Ph and Mr. N, the Hoa Vang District Police launched an investigation and determined that Thanh had committed fraud by selling fictitious land plots to collect deposits before fleeing the area. The total amount of money Thanh defrauded and misappropriated from the two victims was 309 million VND… The case is currently under further investigation.
