According to Egyptian military spokesman Tamer al-Rifai, the operation will take place across the Sinai Peninsula - an area considered the center of persistent violence caused by the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization, the Nile Delta and the Western Desert.

The campaign takes place before Egypt holds presidential elections from March 26-28.

Terrorist attacks have been on the rise in Egypt since the overthrow of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi by the military in July 2013. The incidents have mostly been concentrated in cities in North Sinai, killing hundreds of police and soldiers.

It then spread to other provinces and the target range was expanded to include the military, police, government agencies, diplomatic agencies, foreigners, Christian churches and most recently, mosques.
