According to Egyptian military spokesman Tamer al-Rifai, the campaign will take place across the Sinai Peninsula - an area considered the center of persistent violence caused by the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization - the Nile Delta and the Western Desert.

The campaign takes place before Egypt holds presidential elections from March 26-28.

Since the overthrow of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi by the military in July 2013, terrorist attacks have increased in Egypt. The incidents have been concentrated mostly in cities in North Sinai, killing hundreds of police and soldiers.

It then spread to other provinces and the target range was expanded to include the military, police, government agencies, diplomatic agencies, foreigners, Christian churches and most recently, mosques.
