On August 7, Egypt's Minya Provincial Criminal Court sentenced 12 people to death and 157 to life in prison for murder and an attack on a police station in 2013.

According to the indictment, the defendants were convicted of committing a series of serious acts of violence such as murder, attacking and burning a police station, resulting in the death of Colonel Mostafa El-Attar, Deputy Chief of the station.

The riots occurred after authorities dispersed sit-in protests at Rabaa El-Adawiya and El-Nahda squares in Cairo in the summer of 2013.

The defendants in the Minya case were charged with murder, attempted murder, rioting, unlawful assembly, disturbing the peace, and destruction of public and private property.

In 2014, 37 defendants were sentenced to death before the court ordered a retrial of the case./.
