Egypt: Bomb explodes at Italian consulate in Cairo, one person dead.

Early on the morning of July 11, a large explosion occurred outside the Italian consulate in Cairo, Egypt, causing part of the building's front to collapse.

Egyptian Health Ministry spokesman Hossam Abdel Ghaffar announced that one person had died.

The explosion occurred at 6:30 a.m. (4:30 GMT) and also injured two police officers and three passersby.

According to Egypt's official news agency MENA, initial indications suggest the explosion was caused by a bomb planted in a vehicle parked near the consulate.

Egypt's MENA news agency quoted a security officer as saying that a car bomb caused the explosion. No individual or organization has yet claimed responsibility for the blast.

Reportedly, the consulate was closed when the explosion occurred.
