Earlier in March, the two defendants were arrested by police at a checkpoint while traveling from Sharqiya province in the Nile Delta to the New Cairo district after being found carrying two pieces of marijuana in their car.

Both subjects were released a day later after police took blood and urine samples for testing.

The sentence was announced as part of a series of trials of allies of former President Mohamed Morsi and members of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Mr. Morsi himself is also being tried on many serious charges and could be sentenced to death./.
