Earlier this March, the two defendants were arrested by police at a checkpoint while traveling from Sharqiya province in the Nile Delta to New Cairo district after being found carrying two pieces of marijuana in their car.

Both suspects were released the following day after police took blood and urine samples for testing.

The aforementioned sentence was handed down as part of a series of trials targeting allies of former President Mohamed Morsi and members of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Morsi himself is on trial for numerous serious charges and could face the death penalty.
