Egypt puts its president on trial for leaking state secrets.

Egypt has accused ousted President Mohamed Morsi of leaking national security secrets to Qatar. This move is seen as a new crackdown on him and the banned Muslim Brotherhood party..

VOA reports that the country's top prosecutor said Morsi and 10 others will be put on trial for providing sensitive documents to Qatari intelligence during his time in office. A senior executive at the Al Jazeera television network is also among those accused.

An announcement on September 6th by the Egyptian prosecutor's office stated that this incident was the largest act of treason committed by the Muslim Brotherhood against the country.

According to prosecutors, the leaked documents contained detailed information about the Egyptian military and its weaponry.

Mr. Morsi is currently detained and will face three more trials and could be sentenced to death. He has been imprisoned since being ousted from the presidency last July.

On September 6th, President Sissi called on the Egyptian people to remain calm following a widespread power outage. The prolonged blackout on September 4th plunged large areas of Cairo into darkness.

Power outages were one of the contributing factors to last year's protests demanding Morsi's resignation.
