Airbus said plans are on track and will put the flying taxi into service in 2018.

According to Techrunch, Marius Bebesal - Director of CityAirbus - announced that he has successfully conducted an experiment on the electric motor system on the ground that helps cars fly. The company plans to put the CityAirbus flying car into operation next year.

The CityAirbus flying taxi is a vertical take-off helicopter. It has four electric rotors and can carry up to four passengers on short trips. Its main purpose is to connect transport hubs such as train stations and airports.

The CityAirbus is designed to be piloted, but will transition to an autonomous system as technology upgrades in the future.

According to CNBC, Airbus is directing these taxis along fixed routes at speeds of around 130 km/h. Drivers can avoid traffic jams while reducing the number of vehicles on the road, thereby reducing congestion on the ground.

Short-haul flights are an ideal application for electric battery technology, as it will give the management system a better understanding of the vehicle’s energy levels. In addition, with the ability to swap batteries and charge them automatically, flying taxis will soon be completely driverless.

Of course, many countries around the world have succeeded in developing flying taxis. Most recently, there are flying taxis in Dubai and the unmanned aircraft Passenger Drone in the US.
