(Baonghean) - It's undeniable that Southeast Asian chefs are capable of creating countless luxurious and elaborate dishes. However, besides the dishes served at lavish banquets, street food also leaves an indelible mark on the impression of ASEAN.

We can mention some simple yet distinctive dishes such as satay (grilled skewers), pad Thai (Thai-style sweet and sour stir-fried noodles), nasi uduk (Indonesian coconut rice), or Vietnamese spring rolls. Available everywhere at affordable prices, and most importantly, combining and blending unique flavors, these dishes have become incredibly popular with tourists worldwide.

The culinary arts of ASEAN member countries have been celebrated worldwide for their skillful stir-frying techniques and absolutely delicious flavors. No other region in the world can create dishes that are both unique and familiar to diners like those found here.

On June 12th, the ASEAN Women's Council (AWC) organized the ASEAN Street Food Festival to showcase the richness of Southeast Asian street food. The diverse culinary arts of ASEAN were prepared by chefs who are members of the AWC.

Through this festival, it's evident that the diversity and enticing flavors of local cuisine paint a true picture of the ASEAN community: While containing differences, they complement and enrich each other. And most importantly, street food is the food of the people; therefore, the ASEAN Street Food Festival demonstrates an appreciation for food, or rather, realizes the aspiration to become a people-centered community within ASEAN.

Indeed, ASEAN is a melting pot of delicious food and vibrant people. While perhaps divided by borders, language, and culture, ASEAN nations and their people are bound together by their rich culinary heritage. The distinct characteristics of their dishes further highlight the diversity and uniqueness of the entire community.

In short, street food in particular, and cuisine in general, is an identity not only of a single culture or member country, but also an important element in the shared identity of the ASEAN region.
