Fish is a highly nutritious food that is very beneficial to health. However, eating fish incorrectly can be extremely dangerous, especially for people undergoing treatment for certain illnesses.

Eating fish on an empty stomach can cause gout.

Many people, in an attempt to lose weight, eat only fish and skip rice. Eating on an empty stomach is common, but few realize that this can trigger gout. This is because the purines in fish, when ingested on an empty stomach, increase uric acid levels, causing tissue damage. Tissue damage is a major cause of gout.

Eating raw fish salad can cause liver cancer.

Many people believe that the fresher the fish, the better, and that eating raw fish is the most nutritious. However, this is actually a misconception. Whether farmed or wild, fish always contain certain toxins.

Furthermore, eating raw fish salad is also unhealthy. Raw fish salad contains many parasites that are harmful to the liver, causing parasitic infections, and in severe cases, even liver cancer. Almost all fish species are naturally infected with parasites, and these parasites cannot be destroyed if the fish are not cooked thoroughly.

Like many other animals, fish can ingest parasite eggs that are abundant in the environment. Once inside the animal's body, the parasite eggs develop into larvae and cysts, residing in the animal's internal organs. Freshwater fish are at even higher risk. One of the parasites that fish can become infected with is the tapeworm. If left untreated, this parasite can spread to humans and reside in the intestines for many years, growing to a length of 1-2 meters and causing excruciating pain, weight loss, and anemia.

Therefore, pregnant women and young children should not eat raw, undercooked, or insufficiently cooked fish because it can easily lead to parasitic infections.

Eating fish bile - poisoning

Fish bile is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat gallbladder pain, red eyes, inflammation, sore throat, malignant ulcers, etc., but it must be processed into a medicinal form.

Many people still spread the word that fish bile has medicinal effects such as curing stomach aches, back pain, and asthma. However, to date, there is no scientific evidence to confirm that swallowing fish bile has any medicinal effects, and in fact, many cases of people swallowing fish bile have resulted in death.

The bile of various fish species (including black and white carp) contains toxins, and consuming them can lead to dangerous poisoning.

To prevent food poisoning from eating fish, choose fresh fish that is not damaged by gallbladder rupture or ruptured belly. When preparing fish, carefully remove all the internal organs (especially from large fish); if the fish's gallbladder is ruptured, rinse the fish thoroughly several times or cut off the part of the fish's belly that is contaminated with gallbladder (dark green color).

People who absolutely should not eat fish.

People who have a cough

People with chronic coughs who are taking medication should avoid eating fish, especially seafood, to prevent allergic reactions. Seafood contains high levels of histamine. When too much of this substance enters the bloodstream, it can cause histamine-induced allergic reactions. Healthy individuals who eat seafood will not experience this because their intestines and liver contain monoamines, which inhibit histamine from entering the bloodstream.

However, cough medicine contains monoamine inhibitors, which control the process by which the liver and intestines secrete this substance. Therefore, taking cough medicine while eating a lot of seafood can worsen the condition and cause other harm to the body.

Besides cough medicine, some antibiotics, blood pressure medication, anti-inflammatory drugs, etc., also contain monoamine inhibitors. If you are currently taking these medications to treat an illness, you should avoid eating fish to help speed up your recovery.

People with blood disorders

Because fish contains eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which inhibits platelet aggregation, thereby increasing bleeding in patients. Therefore, people with blood disorders and bleeding disorders such as thrombocytopenia, frequent nosebleeds, internal bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency, etc., should eat little or no fish.

Gout patients

Fish contains purines, which are metabolized into uric acid in the body. High levels of uric acid in the blood plasma are a major cause of gout. Therefore, people who already have gout should eat little or no fish to avoid worsening their condition and harming their health.
