According to a new study, regular vegetarianism can cause a type of genetic mutation that puts people at risk of colon cancer and heart disease.

Researchers at Cornell University analyzed the genetic sequences of vegetarians in India as well as non-vegetarians in the United States.
Accordingly, Indians with a diet based mainly on vegetables and fruits have developed a gene mutation that makes them susceptible to heart disease and colon cancer. “The vegetarian mutation gene has evolved in the vegetarian community over hundreds of generations.
It may make them more susceptible to inflammation and increase their risk of heart disease and colon cancer,” the researchers said. The study examined the genes of 234 Indian vegetarians and 311 non-vegetarian Americans.
Accordingly, gene mutations that cause the risk of heart disease and cancer were found in 68% of Indians, while in Americans this figure was only 18%.
