Life sentence for female police officer who swindled 16 billion VND out of a job
Loan promised to refund if they could not get into the armed forces, so 33 people handed over 16 billion VND.
After two days of trial (June 6-7), Hanoi People's Court sentenced Trieu Thi Phuong Loan to life in prison for defrauding 33 people of nearly 16 billion VND.
The verdict determined that during her time as a police officer in Bac Tu Liem district, Loan borrowed money from 14 people but was unable to pay them back, so she thought of ways to defraud them.
Loan boasted that her father was a driver for the director of a school in the armed forces, her uncle was a deputy director general, and she herself had many connections, so she was able to "get a job" in the police force.
When many people came to ask for help, she collected from 200 to 550 million VND per session, wrote a receipt and set a date to work, promising to refund the money if the job failed.
According to the accusation, from the end of November 2014 to April 2015, Loan received nearly 16 billion VND from 33 people and appropriated the entire amount.
From the time the incident broke until the day of the court hearing, Loan had only recovered nearly one billion VND./.
