On the morning of August 29, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court opened a mobile trial in Hiep Thanh Ward, District 12 and sentenced defendant Nguyen Van Thai (30 years old, residing in Quang Ngai province) to life in prison for murder.

According to the indictment, Nguyen Van Thai and Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan are both from Nghia Hanh, Quang Ngai. Since 2013, Thai and Ngan have been in a relationship. In June 2016, Ngan went to Ho Chi Minh City to sell western medicine in Hiep Thanh Ward and lived with her younger brother.

On May 19, 2016, Ms. Ngan texted Thai asking to break up. Because she didn't want to break up, Thai had the idea of ​​going to Ho Chi Minh City to meet Ms. Ngan to mend their relationship. If Ms. Ngan didn't agree, Thai would kill Ms. Ngan and commit suicide.

Two days later, Thai bought a bottle of weed killer and a knife and took a bus to Ho Chi Minh City. At around 12:30 on May 22, 2016, Thai arrived at the pharmacy where Ms. Ngan worked. At that time, Ms. Ngan was lying on the floor playing with her phone.

Thai asked Ngan why she wanted to break up, but Ngan did not answer and continued playing. Thai grabbed Ngan's phone and threw it on the ground. When Ngan sat up, Thai used his hand to chop her throat, causing her to fall to the floor.

After that, Ms. Ngan went into the bathroom, Thai followed and closed the door. Thai said he would kill Ms. Ngan if she did not come back. Ms. Ngan did not agree and challenged Thai, leading to a fight between the two.

At this time, Thai took out a bottle of weed killer and gave it to Ms. Ngan to drink. When Ms. Ngan refused, Thai drank part of the bottle of weed killer and then pressed Ms. Ngan down on the tile floor and poured the medicine into her mouth. Ms. Ngan refused to drink and tilted her head to one side, causing the medicine to spill out. Thai continued to strangle Ms. Ngan until the victim became motionless.

At this point, because the drug had already taken effect, Thai vomited on Ms. Ngan and passed out. After a while, Thai woke up and drank the remaining weed killer but did not die. Thai continued to use many methods to commit suicide such as electrocuting himself and hanging himself with an electric wire many times, but still did not die.

Afraid that Ms. Ngan's younger brother would find out when he returned from work, Thai ran away. That same evening, Ms. Ngan's younger brother came home from work and discovered Ms. Ngan dead, so he reported it to the police.

From May 2016 to November 2016, Thai was taken by his family to many hospitals for treatment. On November 2, 2016, Thai surrendered to the Ho Chi Minh City Police Department and confessed to his crime.
