India: City temperatures hit record 51ºC

During the ongoing heat wave in India, the temperature in Phalodi city in the desert state of Rajasthan, 600 km west of the capital New Delhi, reached a record high of 51ºC.
According to BP Yadav, a senior official of the India Meteorological Department, the temperature in Phalodi is a record high, the hottest ever in the country. The temperature in Phalodi broke the record of 50.6ºC measured in 1956.
Temperatures in northern India are known to regularly exceed 40ºC in May and June, the hottest months of the year. However, temperatures here rarely reach above 50ºC.
The meteorological department has also warned of a “severe heat wave” in northern and western India over the coming weekend.
According to the warning, the average high temperature in the above areas will be around 45ºC, 5ºC higher than the average temperature of previous years.
