New Delhi is studying the possibility of continuing to buy crude oil from Iran after the United States decided to temporarily exempt some countries from the impact of “oil” sanctions, including India, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ravish Kumar said.

We welcome and appreciate the US taking note of our oil needs. India is the largest buyer of crude oil from Iran and it is very important for our energy security. We are working out the details of the US waiver (for India)," Kumar said at the meeting.

Mr Kumar said he could not reveal the details of the agreement with the US under which India would continue to import Iranian crude. The diplomat also did not comment on the future joint payment mechanism with Tehran and asked journalists to “contact the relevant ministries and departments”.
