Defence Research and Development Organisation of India(DRDO) yesterday announced that it hastrysuccessfully developed an electromagnetic gun with the ability to fire bullets at 6 times the speed of sound. This is considered one of the future war technologies, using electric energy to launch bullets, instead of explosives like conventional weapons, Sputnik reported.
The gun that was successfully tested had a 12 mm caliber, while DRDO is also developing a 30 mm version. The aim of the test was to propel a one-kilogram projectile out of the gun barrel at a speed of over 7,400 km/h.
"The gun has a minimalist design, uses a single electrical pulse to propel the bullet and has very few metal parts around the barrel. This structure allows the bullet to have extremely high muzzle velocity, despite the barrel being only two meters long," said an unnamed DRDO scientist.
The development team claims that the railgun is easy to use and highly mobile. This allows military units to deploy them anywhere in an emergency, making the railgun a valuable tactical weapon for the Indian Navy. Not only does it enhance the power on the battlefield, this weapon is said to change New Delhi's warfare doctrine in the future.
