Eating too much turmeric after giving birth can cause stomachache and diarrhea.
It is a pity not to eat turmeric after giving birth, many people have said so when talking about the "miraculous" effects of turmeric on postpartum women. Is this concept true?
What is the effect of eating turmeric after giving birth?
According to the concept of our ancestors, women after giving birth need to be careful in their diet, so they can only eat meat cooked with turmeric and spinach cooked with meat soup. These are two dishes that help women after giving birth to expel lochia, fight inflammation and nourish the blood.
Physician Bui Hong Minh, former President of the Ba Dinh Oriental Medicine Association, said that in Oriental medicine, turmeric has a warm, spicy, bitter taste that is very good for women after giving birth and during pregnancy. Turmeric is used to fight inflammation, replenish blood, restore incisions and caesarean sections after giving birth, and help detoxify toxins accumulated in the body. Lean pork is benign and nutritious. Malabar spinach is not only nutritious but also has the properties of clearing heat, detoxifying, stimulating uterine contractions, and helping to clean lochia.

Although it is very good, if the mother only eats lean pork cooked with turmeric for a whole month, it will cause the mother to lack nutrients. Therefore, the mother should combine other dishes such as fish stewed with turmeric, chicken stewed with turmeric, beef stewed with turmeric. Although turmeric is very good for postpartum women, Traditional Medicine Practitioner Bui Hong Minh cautions not to overuse it.
Dr. Truong Hong Son, Director of the Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine, Deputy Secretary General of the Vietnam Medical Association, said that postpartum women have higher nutritional needs than in the last 3 months of pregnancy, about 500Kcal/day. To have good health and enough milk for breastfeeding, you need to eat a variety of foods. If you only eat lean meat cooked with turmeric and spinach, your nutrition will be unbalanced due to eating too much of one food for a long time. This can affect the health of both mother and child.
Turmeric is a natural product and is very safe to use. However, eating too much of anything or using too much of anything is not good.

"If you eat too much turmeric, it can cause stomachache and diarrhea. It also stimulates the adrenal glands to secrete cortisone, a substance with high anti-inflammatory properties, causing the body's anti-inflammatory ability to decrease. Therefore, it is reasonable for mothers to only use 300-500g of turmeric per day," said Dr. Truong Hong Son.
Dr. Truong Hong Son noted that when mothers drink turmeric water, they should not drink turmeric and Western medicine at the same time, because this is not good for the blood. They should drink about 2-3 hours apart and drink turmeric before taking Western medicine. Mothers who are suffering from menstrual disorders or menorrhagia should not eat turmeric because it will make this condition worse. Because turmeric has the effect of clearing the blood, treating blood stasis, and amenorrhea, mothers should wait until their period is over before continuing to eat turmeric after giving birth.
Postpartum women should not diet excessively.

According to Dr. Truong Hong Son, in order to provide enough nutrition for the body as well as have enough milk to feed the baby, mothers after giving birth should not diet too much. Excessive abstinence also makes mothers feel bored with meals, easily leading to loss of appetite if it continues for a long time. Therefore, to stimulate appetite and enjoy food, the daily menu needs to be rich.
