A recent study indicates that eating less fiber and more saturated fat and sugar is associated with shorter and more disrupted sleep.

The study found that eating more fiber leads to deeper sleep. The research also indicated that high sugar intake is associated with disrupted sleep.

The study also found that participants fell asleep faster after eating a fixed meal provided by a nutritionist, which contained less saturated fat, compared to their own choice of meals.

It took approximately 29 minutes for study participants to fall asleep after consuming a buffet meal; whereas it took only 17 minutes for those who ate a control meal to fall asleep.

A recent study suggests that eating less fiber and more saturated fat and sugar is associated with shorter and more disrupted sleep.

In a randomized, crossover study of both women and men of normal body weight and an average age of 35, participants spent 9 hours in bed between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. each night in a sleep lab.

Sleep data were analyzed from the third night, after three days of controlled eating, and the fifth night after one day of unrestricted eating. This study also showed that unrestricted meals resulted in more interrupted sleep than controlled meals.

Dr. Marie-Pierre St-Onge, lead researcher and assistant professor in the Department of Medicine and the Institute of Human Nutrition at Columbia University Medical Center (USA), stated: "Our main finding is that the quality of diet affects the quality of sleep."
