Security for Mr. Kim: “Not even an ant can get through”
(Baonghean.vn) - When North Korean leader Kim Jong-un walked step by step towards the inter-Korean border on the morning of April 27, he was escorted by a team of bodyguards carefully selected for their health, fighting skills, martial arts skills, and even appearance.
Men in crisp suits and blue-and-white striped ties stood in front of and around Mr Kim as he walked across the military demarcation line for a historic handshake with South Korean President Moon Jae-in. Twelve bodyguards even jogged alongside North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s car to protect him as he returned to North Korea for lunch in a black limousine.

North Korea has long been known as one of the most tightly controlled countries in the world. Foreign officials attending any event with Kim must undergo hours of security checks and surrender all electronic devices, including phones. The Guard Command is a military unit tasked with ensuring the security of North Korea's leadership.
Ri Yong Guk, a North Korean defector, wrote in his 2013 memoir that up to six different layers of bodyguards protected leader Kim Jong-il during his trips to the countryside to inspect military units, plantations or farms. “It was one of the most stringent security systems in the world, and even an ant would have difficulty passing through,” he wrote.
Or, in the parade celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the armed forces last February, Pyongyang used three different types of security units to ensure the safety of Mr. Kim Jong-un.
