According to the indictment, due to irreconcilable differences, Phan Truong Phi – Hue's husband – requested a divorce. On March 24, 2015, Phi returned home from the South to finalize the divorce proceedings. On the morning of March 26, Hue conceived the idea of killing her husband and bought two packets of rat poison, which she hid at home. Around 4 PM that same day, while Phi was cooking pig's intestines, Hue secretly put one packet of rat poison into the pot. Noticing Hue's abnormal behavior, Phi questioned her. Initially, Hue claimed ignorance, but later admitted to putting the rat poison in the food. When Phi went to report it to the police, Hue fled on a motorbike. Three days later, Hue returned, apologized to her husband, and then surrendered to the investigating agency, confessing that she put the rat poison in the pot to commit suicide, not to kill her husband.
The results of the National Forensic Institute's examination show that the poison found in the samples seized from Mr. Phi's pot of offal contains zinc phoshid. This is a toxic substance that can be fatal to humans and animals.
At the trial, Dau Thi Hue confessed to her crime and begged for forgiveness from her family and husband. After a comprehensive review of the case, and considering the defendant's remorse and the fact that the crime was not completed, the court sentenced Dau Thi Hue to 4 years in prison.
