The victim in this case is Pham Thi Oanh (born in 1994, from Ha Nam, a 4th year student at Hue University of Education) who was an exam supervisor at the 2016 National High School Exam in Ha Tinh.
Through the investigation, it was found that on the evening of July 3, 2016, Tien drove a taxi to pick up Ms. Pham Thi Oanh from a motel in Ha Tinh city to attend a mass at a church in the same city. While taking Ms. Oanh back to the motel, Tien had the intention of robbing her, so he drove the car around to Thach Trung commune (Ha Tinh city). When they reached a deserted area on Provincial Road 9, bordering Thach Ha district and Ha Tinh city, Tien strangled Ms. Oanh, causing her to lose consciousness.
While Tien continued to drive around, Ms. Oanh was unconscious and used her foot to press the gear lever and the car door made no sound. Because the victim no longer had the strength to resist, Tien drove the taxi to the Su bridge area (in Cay town, Thach Ha district, Ha Tinh) and threw Ms. Oanh into the river. After that, Tien continued to pick up another passenger before returning the car to the company. Two days after committing the crime, Tien was arrested by the police. Ms. Oanh's body was also discovered shortly after.

During the investigation into the murder of the female supervisor, Tien also confessed that he had previously molested an 11-year-old female passenger. On December 15, 2016, Ha Tinh Provincial Police issued a decision to prosecute Tien for child molestation.
At the trial, Tien calmly and clearly answered questions about the murder of the female supervisor as well as the act of molesting the 11-year-old girl. The defendant stated that after strangling Ms. Oanh until she lost consciousness, the victim then started moving again. Why did the defendant not save her but throw Ms. Oanh's body into the river while the victim was still dying? the judge asked. Tien answered briefly: "At that time, the defendant panicked and was scared."
After fully considering the relevant circumstances, the People's Court sentenced Nguyen Van Tien to death for three crimes: murder, robbery and child rape./.
