According to the indictment of the Provincial People's Procuracy, from March to July 2006, Vu Dinh Duong, Vu Dinh Tuyen, and Vu Dinh Thich participated in a drug trafficking ring led by Tran Dinh Phi (born in 1974, residing in Que Phong district). When Tran Dinh Phi's drug ring was dismantled, the three suspects fled and were issued nationwide arrest warrants.
While on the run, in 2009, Vu Dinh Duong changed his name, fled to Bac Giang province, and established a transnational drug trafficking ring. On August 7, 2013, Duong was arrested with over 9 billion VND while on his way to deliver drugs. In the trial on September 22, 2014, the Bac Giang Provincial People's Court sentenced Vu Dinh Duong to death.
Vu Dinh Duong was extradited to Nghe An province to assist with the trial. At the trial, Duong claimed that the events happened so long ago that he couldn't remember anything. However, Duong's criminal acts were clarified by the Nghe An Provincial Police Investigation Agency. From March to July 2006, Vu Dinh Duong conducted four transactions with Tran Dinh Phi involving 40 blocks of heroin. Vu Dinh Tuyen conducted three transactions involving nine blocks of heroin, and Vu Dinh Thich also participated in two transactions involving nine blocks of heroin with drug kingpin Tran Dinh Phi.
The court sentenced Vu Dinh Duong to death, Vu Dinh Tuyen to life imprisonment, and Vu Dinh Thich to 20 years in prison for illegally trafficking narcotics.
