Recalling the heroic years of his youth participating in the resistance war against the US to save the country, Colonel Bao said that at the age of 17, following the sacred call of the Fatherland, he volunteered to join the army and fight on the Quang Tri battlefield.
In his first spring in the army, he could never forget the sacred moment with his comrades in the trenches hearing Uncle Ho's New Year's greetings - Spring Mau Than 1968.
Participating in the Khe Sanh campaign, his squad was assigned to guard the high point blocking the west side of Ta Con Airport where the enemy was stationed. When entering the guard post, the enemy discovered our forces and attacked very strongly, using coordinates, B52 bombers, and incendiary bombs all day and all night. There were days when the enemy attacked so hard that the whole squad went hungry... After several days of fierce fighting, the whole squad had only 3 gunmen left.
“We had to move and fight while trying to prevent the enemy from occupying the high ground. According to the report after the battle, we killed 208 American soldiers, and in the area where I was stationed, 78 enemies were shot down. What helped us achieve that feat was our sacred love for the Fatherland, and President Ho Chi Minh’s call: “Fight to drive out the Americans, fight to overthrow the puppet regime,” said Mr. Bao.
Throughout the great resistance war of the nation, under the guiding light of the Party and beloved Uncle Ho, he and his comrades experienced the Khe Sanh campaign, the Quang Tri campaign in 1972, the Thuong Duc campaign and then the historic Ho Chi Minh campaign.
Many of his comrades and teammates fell for the independence and freedom of the nation. Our generation is honored to live, fight and sacrifice for that noble ideal.
“I myself, having grown from a private to a high-ranking officer of the army and now returning to civilian life, participating in activities of the Veterans Association, have always kept in mind Uncle Ho's teachings. Day by day, I am more and more aware of the greatness of his life, career and the everlasting value of Ho Chi Minh's ideology. I am honored to have received many noble titles, orders and medals from the Party, the State and the Army, but our most noble title is the title of "Uncle Ho's Soldier", "Soldier of the People" - Mr. Bao emotionally shared.
President Ho Chi Minh is a great man who left a deep mark on the history of the nation and the history of humanity. The further time goes by, the more we recognize his humanity and greatness. Ho Chi Minh's thoughts and morality live forever in our hearts, illuminating the path leading the Vietnamese revolution to every victory.
Celebrating the 130th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh's birthday, continuing to promote studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and lifestyle, each of us remembers Uncle Ho even more, vows to self-cultivate, practice, learn, explore, innovate, practice what we preach, and complete well the assigned tasks according to each person's position and responsibilities.
"Each cadre and party member should strive to be a worthy servant of the people, a student and descendant of Uncle Ho; to build the homeland and country to become increasingly rich and prosperous" - Mr. Nguyen Huu Bao confided.
