Double pressure of 10th grade entrance exam

(Baonghean.vn) - The competition rate for grade 10 this year is not beyond expectations when the pressure is heavy on students in the city, the central areas of districts and towns on the outskirts of the city. That is the reality in Nghe An in particular.

Pressure in suburban areas

Le Hong Phong Secondary School is considered a gifted school in Hung Nguyen district. For many years, the school has always achieved a 100% admission rate for public schools. In addition, many students of the school are admitted to specialized schools in the province.

This year, according to statistics from Le Hong Phong Secondary School, more than 90% of students registered for Thai Lao High School - a public high school located in the center of Hung Nguyen district town. The remaining students were scatteredly registered at Pham Hong Thai High School, Le Hong Phong High School and some students registered for schools in Nam Dan district.

Many students shared that, compared to previous years, in the 2024-2025 admission season, they are under more pressure with the entrance exam at the beginning of the school year.

In the most recent mock exam, I got 20 points, close to the standard score of Thai Lao High School last year. I was not very confident, so in addition to NV1 applied to Thai Lao High School, I registered for the second choice to Anh Son 2 High School.

To create a good mindset for students, Le Hong Phong Secondary School has recently increased review activities. In addition, many exams and tests have been organized to help students accurately assess their abilities as a basis for admission registration.

Although compared to many other schools in the area, our school has more advantages in terms of student quality. But that does not mean that the school is complacent, because we know that the entrance exam for grade 10 is getting more and more difficult. In addition to the pressure of competition within the district, Hung Nguyen students also have to compete with students from Vinh city who register to come to the district.

As expected, after the Department of Education and Training announced the admission form for grade 10, Hung Nguyen was one of the localities with the number of applications and the competition rate among the top in the province. For example, at Thai Lao High School, this year the school only accepted 360 students but there were 658 applications, the school's admission rate was only 54%.

Ms. Luu Thi Thanh Tra - Vice Principal of the school, said: Among the candidates registering for the entrance exam to Thai Lao High School, there are currently 131 candidates from schools in Vinh city, higher than in previous years. This certainly causes many difficulties for students in the district, because the quality of students in Vinh city is higher than that of students in the district. This is also one of the reasons why the benchmark score at our school has increased rapidly in the past few years. In the previous school year alone, the school's benchmark score was 19.3 points, among the schools with the highest benchmark scores in the province and an increase of 6 points compared to previous years.

According to statistics from 4 high schools in Hung Nguyen district this year, the whole district has 2,009 candidates registered for the exam. Of these, there are 1,549 students from the district and 460 students from other districts, mainly from Vinh city.

In particular, Nguyen Truong To High School, although the school is located the farthest from the district (in Hung Trung commune), has 133 students registered for the exam. With a total target of 1,395 students, the average admission rate in Hung Nguyen district is about 69%.

At Nghi Loc 3 High School in Nghi Loc district - located close to many communes in Vinh city such as Hung Loc, Nghi Duc, Nghi An - this year, there were also 94 students from Vinh city registered to take the entrance exam. Previously, anticipating the pressure of this year's enrollment season, the Department of Education and Training increased the school's enrollment quota by one more class and then continued to increase the number of students in each class from 45 to 48 students, but the school's enrollment at the beginning of the year is still very difficult to predict.

I think the number of 94 students from Vinh city registering for the entrance exam to the school is not the final number. Because after the exam, students can continue to change their wishes and we expect that there will be more students registering for the school.

Like last year, initially we only had less than 90 students registering for NV1 to the school, but in fact, after announcing the results, there were 105 students from Vinh city who were admitted. If Vinh city students continue to come in large numbers, students from communes in Nghi Loc district will simultaneously bear the “double pressure” of having to compete with students in the district and also with students from Vinh city – where the quality of candidates is much higher.

Unpredictable

The social network group “Nghe An Students” has more than 49,000 members. At this time, the number of interactions on the group has increased and the participants are mainly 9th grade students in their final year. Through monitoring, every day on this fanpage there are dozens of questions from students related to the entrance exam to grade 10 such as competition ratio, benchmark scores, exam prediction, and learning exchange.

Before that, more than a week ago, a debate also took place when some students from districts such as Hung Nguyen, Nghi Loc, Nam Dan, and Cua Lo town expressed their concern when too many students from the city came to district schools to register for the exam. The problem is that many students, after being admitted, only study for a short time and then transfer back to the central area. Meanwhile, students in the district are not allowed to study because they cannot compete with students from the city. After a school year, many schools lack students but are not allowed to recruit new students.

For various reasons, in order to stabilize the student population in recent years, most public schools have not recruited second-choice students, limiting enrollment from students in other regions. However, with the continuous increase in the number of 9th grade students and the pressure of enrollment in central schools, students continue to flock to district schools. In fact, the number of applications for this year's exam shows that most district schools, especially those near Vinh, have a competition rate of 70-75%.

Every year, nearly 700 students from Vinh City register for the exam in the district. With the advantage of learning conditions from junior high school, these candidates later occupied nearly 500 quotas of schools. This means that hundreds of students in the district lost the opportunity to enter public schools.

This is also one of the reasons why in recent years, many secondary schools in Nghi Loc district have been vigorously implementing streaming, even "forcing" students not to take the 10th grade entrance exam for fear of not being able to compete.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thong - Head of Education and Training Department of Nghi Loc district

Regarding the Entrance ExamGrade 10This year, one of the issues that worries many parents and students is the difficulty in predicting the number of candidates registering for the exam, the competition rate and the admission score. Because, according to the regulations of this exam, after completing 3 exams, students will be able to change their wishes. Therefore, it is impossible to rule out the possibility that the number of students registering for schools will fluctuate.

In particular, if the schools in the top group have high admission scores, they can increase because many students with high scores register. On the contrary, the calculation for the schools in the bottom group is also difficult to do, because the number of students coming and going cannot be determined, and students in the lower group will have less chance of being admitted because they have to compete with students in the same examination council and with many candidates from other examination sites who transfer back.

Due to the above characteristics, although up to now the Department of Education and Training has announced the enrollment quota, announced the number of candidates and the enrollment methods of the schools, the 10th grade entrance exam is still "unpredictable" with more than 44,000 students taking the exam, the race to enter public schools is expected to continue to be hot because only about 75% of students are admitted, in which many schools have an admission rate of only 60 - 65%./.
