Exam pressure makes young girl lose all her hair

A 20-year-old British female student became bald in just two months due to stress and anxiety about upcoming university exams, DailyMail reported.

Katie-Anna Moore had previously been proud of her thick blonde hair, but ahead of her summer exams at Bournemouth University, she started going bald.

In March of this year, while washing her hair, she put shampoo on her head and a handful of hair slipped through her fingers. Since then, every time she washed her hair, Moore’s hair fell out in handfuls. Within eight weeks, 70% of the hair on her head had fallen out.

Thinking that her hair was falling out naturally due to overuse of straightening, Moore didn't tell anyone, but her hair continued to fall out. Within two weeks, before anyone else started to notice, Moore found her clothes covered in hair.

After the exam, Moore went to see a doctor and was diagnosed with alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease in which patches of bare skin appear on the body or scalp. The doctor warned that the condition was likely caused by stress and that Moore could lose all her hair.

"I feel like an old man who has to take hair from one place to cover up bald spots in another, while I'm only 20 years old. That makes me miserable. I cry all the time and don't want to talk to my friends," the student said.

At the end of April, Moore went to her father's house in Salisbury, Wiltshire (UK) to hide, although she said she needed a quiet space to study. After a few days with her daughter, Moore's father Danny noticed that her daughter's hair was falling out. "That's when I burst into tears. It's a cycle, when you're stressed, your hair falls out more and that makes you more stressed."

In mid-May, Moore went to the doctor again and had a series of blood tests done, but nothing unusual was found, except for the usual slight iron deficiency.

Hair loss is a disease that occurs in both men, women and children. It occurs suddenly but often recurs. Although hair loss does not affect a person's health, it affects the quality of life and mental health.
