| Apple has just launched Apple Music, a service with the ambition to revolutionize the online music industry. |
Recently, Apple launched Apple Music – an online music service priced at $9.99 per month, with the potential to revolutionize how consumers listen to music. This service is touted as a "revolution" while other music industries are struggling with declining customer numbers and still searching for new ways for customers to pay for music.
In a letter to Eric Schneiderman, head of the New York City Department of Justice, Universal Music Group stated that it had reached an agreement with Apple and music companies such as Sony Music and Warner Music to prevent the availability of free services and to prevent the licensing of music recordings to any online music service.
"This letter is part of an investigation into the online music business – a new and impactful industry that is changing how people listen to and perceive music," said Matt Mittenthal, spokesman for Eric Schneiderman. "It's important to ensure consumer interests are protected by continuing to develop free services." An Apple spokesperson declined to comment on the investigation.
