Argentina won a hard-fought victory without Messi, Aguero, and Mascherano.

Against the weaker opponent El Salvador, the reigning World Cup runners-up struggled to win 2-0 in a friendly match where they rested three of their brightest stars.

Argentina's victory came only in the second half, with the opening goal being an own goal by the opposing defender in the 54th minute, and the final goal, making it 2-0, coming just two minutes before the end of the match thanks to newcomer Federico Mancuello.

Previously, Argentina had faced considerable difficulties in finishing chances due to the absence of their two best forwards – Messi was injured and not in the starting lineup, while Aguero was sidelined for tactical reasons, alongside their most important midfielder, Mascherano.

The World Cup runners-up started with an attacking quartet of Lavezzi, Tevez, and Di Maria supporting striker Higuain. But despite dominating the game and creating numerous scoring opportunities, these players were unable to deliver the necessary breakthrough against El Salvador – an opponent ranked 87 places lower than Argentina in the FIFA rankings.

The opening goal in the 54th minute came about by chance. Ever Banega's hopeful long-range shot deflected off Rendros and into the net, leaving Derby Carrillo – the goalkeeper – in excellent form with a series of spectacular saves before and after the shot.

But that goal didn't improve Argentina's performance for the remaining half hour. They remained helpless against Carrillo, despite several substitutions made by coach Tata Martino.

It wasn't until the 88th minute that Argentina sealed the 2-0 victory. Mancuello, who replaced Di Maria on the left wing, shone with a dangerous free kick from the right, at a very tight angle, sending the ball into the far corner and leaving the El Salvador goalkeeper helpless.

This goal also marked a significant milestone for the Independiente winger on his debut for the Argentina national team.

After this match in Washington, Argentina will travel to New Jersey to prepare for their next friendly match against Ecuador on March 31st.
