The Armenian government has announced its readiness to provide military support to Nagorny Karabakh, the disputed region between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

At a meeting with military officials of foreign embassies in the country, Armenian Deputy Defense Minister David Tonoyan announced that, due to large-scale military attacks from Azerbaijan, the Armenian side is ready to provide military support to the Nagorny-Karabakh region if necessary.

The above statement by Armenian authorities is expected to further increase tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

In a related development, Nagorny-Karabakh defense officials said fighting continued in the southeastern and northeastern regions of Nagorny-Karabakh, while rejecting Azerbaijan's earlier statement that it was implementing a ceasefire in Nagorny-Karabakh.

Since the night of April 1, fighting has broken out in the Nagorno-Karabakh border area, with both Azerbaijan and Armenia accusing each other of violating the ceasefire agreement. The tense situation has caused concern in the international community, which has repeatedly called on both sides to exercise restraint.

Nagorny-Karabakh is a region located deep in the southwest of Azerbaijan, but has a majority of Armenian residents and wants to annex Armenia. This has caused a sovereignty dispute between the two countries, culminating in a war that lasted from February 1988 to May 1994.
