ATMs were used 50 years ago.
It's been half a century since the world's first ATM was put into operation in the UK by Barclays bank.
In June 1967, Barclays Bank installed the first ATM in Enfield, north London. This device was invented by John Shepherd-Barron and is recognized by most experts in the world as the first ATM.
In fact, there is some debate about which ATM was the first and who invented it. To be more precise, the ATM invented by John Shepherd-Barron was the first ATM in the world to be installed and used by anyone.
Before that, another version of the ATM was developed by an American named Luther George Simjian. The product was installed at City Bank (New York) in 1939. However, the machine was removed in the same year because no one used it.
Some Vietnamese people even believe that ATM was invented by Dr. Do Duc Cuong, a Vietnamese-American. However, Mr. Do Duc Cuong was the one who basically perfected the core structure and expanded the ATM system to the market. His contributions were recognized during his time working for Citibank in the US.
