Australia creates sustainable superfoods for farmed shrimp.

Australian researchers have created a sustainable superfood for shrimp that could boost shrimp growth rates by at least 30%.

Researchers have been trying to develop marine bacteria as a feed alternative for farmed shrimp for at least a decade. Typically, farmed shrimp are fed processed feed, which lacks consistency because it is made from wild-caught fish.

Expert Nigel Preston said his team has discovered a way to grow marine bacteria in controlled environments, then turn these bacteria into a food additive called Novacq.

The new feed accelerates metabolism, allowing for faster nutrient absorption and thus quicker shrimp growth. Test results on wild shrimp and shrimp fed this new feed showed a growth rate of 30-40% in shrimp fed the new feed.

Experts believe this new invention is good for consumers, the environment, and shrimp farmers alike.

Bacterial cultivation technology can be applied in many environments, is simple and inexpensive, so all countries can adopt this method.
