Variety reported that James Cameron, the creator of the 2009 sci-fi blockbuster Avatar, has finished writing the scripts for the next four films. And all four films will begin filming at the same time.
Last year, at the annual trade show for movie theaters in Las Vegas (USA), called CinemaCon, director James Cameron also talked about his film project and attracted widespread public attention. James Cameron said that he would make 4 sequels based on the script of the original 2009 film, but the later scripts would be expanded by him in terms of scale as well as the nature of the stories.
Speaking at CinemaCon in 2016, James Cameron said he would make four Avatar movies instead of two. |
Avatar was conceived by James Cameron in 1994 and he planned to start production after the release of Titanic (1997). However, after 1997, the production process was halted because he realized that the cinematographic techniques at that time did not meet the strict requirements he set for his work. It was not until 2009 that Avatar was released to the public and became a box office hit that year, earning more than 2.8 billion USD.
After that resounding success, he continued to sign a contract with the 20th Century Fox media entertainment group to start making the next 4 parts. And even more surprising is that James Cameron will film all 4 parts at the same time instead of separating one part and then the other. The plan of this 63-year-old director makes fans worried about whether he can do it or not. But for the famous Hollywood director, this is a plan that helps him save time, money and also aims to create unity and continuity for the 4 parts of the film.
James Cameron has contributed to the world cinema with many outstanding works such as Titanic (1997), Aliens (1986), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) and Avatar (2009). Although he is over 60 years old, James Cameron is a director who is always full of ideas.
“We decided to embark on this massive film project by producing four films, each with its own distinct storyline, but still within a unified, consistent storyline,” James Cameron shared.
Participating in the acting of these 4 latest films are still familiar faces such as Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang... However, in addition to the director and actors, the immediate attraction of the 4 films must also be mentioned as the script.
James Cameron co-wrote the scripts with other writers. In the second part, he co-wrote with Josh Friedman (writer of the hit TV series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles 2008 - 2009, the film War of the Worlds in 2005) and Shane Salerno (writer of the 1998 blockbuster Armageddon). The third part's script was co-written with Shane Salerno, along with two other writers, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (writers of hit films such as Jurassic World in 2015, Rise of the Apes in 2011). In parts 4 and 5, James Cameron will continue to collaborate with Shane Salerno.
There has been a big change in the release dates of the latest Avatar movies. As previously reported by the media, Avatar 2 will be released in 2018, the final part will end in 2023, but now 20th Century Fox has announced that part 2 will be released on December 18, 2020, part 3 is on December 17, 2021, part 4 is on December 20, 2024 and the final part will be released on December 19, 2025.
