French authorities said on November 15 they were searching for Abdeslam Salah, 26, and described him as dangerous. Police warned the public: "Do not intervene alone, in any way." Belgian authorities said his brother, Ibrahim, died in the three-hour massacre on the night of November 13 in Paris that left at least 132 people dead. Another brother, Mohamed, was arrested on Saturday in the Molenbeek area of Brussels.
French President Hollande has confirmed that the coordinated attack on Friday night was the work of the Islamic State (IS).
French authorities initially said there were eight attackers, but the next day they said there were only seven, with six blowing themselves up and one shot dead by police. They said they were searching for an eighth attacker. It is unclear whether this was Salah.
Four attackers have been identified. One, whose nationality is unknown, is a Syrian migrant. Serbia’s Blic newspaper published a photo of a passport page, showing the holder as Ahmad al-Mohammad, 25, from Idlib, Syria. He passed through the Greek island of Leros on October 3 and the Serbian border crossing at Presevo on October 7, officials in those countries said. It is unclear whether the passports are genuine or fake. The civil war has displaced millions of Syrians, creating a thriving black market for fake passports.
At least three of the attackers were French. Two lived in Brussels. The third was Ismaël Omar Mostefaï, 29, originally from Courcouronnes, France, and living in Chartres, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Paris. He and two other gunmen carried out the shooting that killed 89 people at the Bataclan concert hall.
Mostefaï was the third of five children born to an Algerian father and a Portuguese mother. Mostefaï worked in a bakery, according to a former neighbor in Chartres.
“It was a normal family, like everyone else,” said a former neighbor of Mostefaï’s who did not want to be named. “He played with children, never talked about religion. He was normal. Always happy and laughed a lot.”
The two cars used in the attack were rented in Belgium early last week, Belgian federal prosecutors said yesterday. The grey Volkswagen Polo was left at the Bataclan concert hall after being used by the three terrorists.
A black Seat Leon, found early yesterday in a Paris suburb, with three Kalashnikovs inside. The car was used as a getaway car by the restaurant shooters.
Belgian police also said they had arrested seven people.
