Three brothers went to jail because of a calf
Youngest brother sentenced to life in prison, two older brothers received heavy sentences after beating their neighbor to death due to a conflict over a calf trampling vegetables.
Today (July 14), the High People's Court in Hanoi opened an appeal hearing to consider the request for leniency of Luong Van Khanh and his two younger brothers, Luong Van Hanh and Luong Van Nguyen, for murder.
The first instance verdict more than half a year ago accused that at the end of January 2017, Nguyen heard that his biological mother had a conflict with Mr. Phan Anh Tri because the calf had ruined the neighbor's vegetables.
Nguyen called his brother Khanh and said: "Come see how Tri and his wife beat her." Then he took a large wooden stick and rode his motorbike over.Hanh and Khanh both took iron pipes to Mr. Tri's house to "ask questions".
Nguyen kicked open the gate and went in with Khanh, but when he saw Mr. Tri holding a machete, he quickly ran out. All three Khanh brothers stood outside the gate cursing.
Two women from both families tried to stop him, but failed. At that moment, Mr. Tri rushed out and slashed Nguyen in the forehead. Nguyen grabbed the knife and, along with his brother, slashed Mr. Tri many times. Hanh used an iron pipe to repeatedly hit the victim.
Mr. Tri ran into the yard and collapsed and died. After going to the hospital to have his wounds bandaged, Nguyen and his two brothers went to the police station to surrender.
The first instance trial in early December 2017 sentenced Nguyen to life in prison, Hanh to 17 years, and Khanh to 13 years in prison.
In the appeal hearing, the court found that Nguyen was the one who directly caused Mr. Tri's death, but accepted Khanh and Hanh's request for a reduction in sentence, sentencing them to 11 and 15 years in prison, respectively.
