Three US warships attacked by missiles at the same time

Three US warships operating in the Red Sea were attacked by multiple missiles at the same time yesterday, but none of the missiles hit the ships.

A defense official in Washington said the incident occurred at around 7:30 p.m. It is unclear how many surface-to-surface missiles were launched at three US warships, the USS Mason, USS Nitze and USS Ponce, according to AFP. The destroyer USS Mason had to fire to defend against enemy missiles.

"We are aware of the reports and are assessing the situation. All our ships and crew are safe and unharmed," another defense official said.

This is the third time in a week that US warships have been targeted by missiles fired from the coastal area of ​​Yemen, a country engulfed in civil war.

The civil war in Yemen has so far claimed more than 6,800 lives, injured more than 35,000 and displaced at least three million people since a Saudi-led coalition launched a military campaign there last year to support the defeated Yemeni government against Houthi rebels.

On October 13, the US Navy fired five Tomahawk cruise missiles, destroying three mobile radar stations located in the Houthi-controlled territory on the Red Sea coast. Previously, Houthi rebels were accused of firing rockets at the USS Mason twice in just four days.
