At around midnight on September 6, Dat broke into the Tan Loc Commune People's Committee headquarters, used a crowbar to pry open the doors of four leaders' offices, and broke a safe but did not take any valuables. Before leaving, Dat wrote on a piece of paper the words "the commune is too poor" and "see you next time" and left them on the table.

At 5am the same day, Dat continued to break into the house of Mrs. Bui Thi Phuong (residing in Ich Hau commune), broke the safe and stole 5 taels of gold and 20 million VND. After taking a large amount of property, the thief took a bus to Ho Chi Minh City to escape.

On September 14, Dat was arrested. Searching his rented room, authorities seized more than 82 million VND, a motorbike and related evidence.

Dat had a previous conviction for theft of property and was released from prison in 2015.
