The Malaysian Prime Minister's grandmother was also on flight MH17.

The 83-year-old grandmother of the Malaysian Prime Minister, Sri Siti Amirah, is also the grandmother of Hussein, Malaysia's Defense Minister.

On July 19, Malaysian Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein announced that Prime Minister Najib Razak's grandmother was among the victims of the ill-fated MH17 flight.

Flight MH17 was shot down in the Donetsk war zone on July 17 while en route from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Kuala Lumpur, killing 298 people. The crash site was only about 50km from the Russian border.

The 83-year-old grandmother of the Malaysian Prime Minister, Sri Siti Amirah, is also the grandmother of Hussein. Hussein's mother and the mother of Prime Minister Najib Razak are sisters.

Hussein wrote on his personal Twitter page, "Please pray for her," and posted a photo of his grandmother wearing a Muslim headscarf.

The Malaysian Prime Minister's family said: "Sri Siti Amirah was a very kind and beautiful grandmother. She was a family woman and took very good care of our grandfather. We called her Ibu (mother)."

Siti Amirah, originally from Indonesia, was traveling alone and departed from Amsterdam on flight MH17. According to her schedule, she was to transit through Kuala Lumpur before arriving in Jogjakarta, Indonesia. There, she was to attend Eid al-Fitr, the biggest Muslim festival, celebrated at the end of the Ramadan fasting month.

Siti Amirah married Mohammad Omar Noah, the maternal grandfather of Prime Minister Najib, as his second wife.

Prime Minister Najib, 60, is the son of Malaysia's second Prime Minister Abdul Razak, while Defence Minister Hishammuddin is the son of the country's third Prime Minister Hussein Onn.
