The scientists were honoured for discovering how chromosomes are copied completely during cell division and protected from degradation, the Karolinska Institute in Sweden said.

According to the Karolinska Institute, these findings could aid research into cancer and aging, help people better understand cells, lift the veil of mystery about disease development mechanisms, and pave the way for the development of new effective therapies.

Scientist Blackburn, who holds dual American and Australian citizenship, is a professor of biology and physiology at the University of California, San Francisco, USA. Mr. Greider is a professor of molecular biology and genetics, working at the School of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA.

Mr. Szostak was born in England and has worked at the Faculty of Medicine, Harvard University, USA since 1979. He is currently a professor of genetics at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, USA. In addition, he is also a member of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is traditionally awarded first in the year for groundbreaking research. The prize comes with 10 million Swedish kronor ($1.4 million), a diploma and an invitation to the award ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden, on December 10.

The prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Literature and the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced this week.
