AFP/Reuters reported that Park Geun-hye, daughter of the late South Korean President Park Chung Hee, was sworn in on February 25 as the country's first female president.

The swearing-in ceremony took place in front of approximately 70,000 people in front of the National Assembly building in Seoul.

At the ceremony, the new South Korean president called on North Korea to immediately abandon its nuclear ambitions and stop wasting scarce resources on its arms race program.

She sent a warning message to the neighboring country: "North Korea's recent nuclear test is a challenge to the survival and future of the North Korean people. Therefore, mistakes must be avoided because the most tragic victims will be none other than North Korea."

She also urged North Korea to "join the path toward peace and shared development," and expressed hope that Pyongyang would respect past agreements and return to the negotiating table.

South Korea's first female president also reaffirmed her commitment to seeking a "confidence-building process" on the Korean Peninsula to "lay the foundation for an era of reunification and harmony."
