With the goal of becoming a leading specialized hospital, over the years, Nghe An Oncology Hospital has been one of the typical units of Nghe An Health sector in terms of professional development, application, innovation, creativity and scientific research.

With the motto that each scientific research topic, a technical solution applied to the practice of examination and treatment contributes to helping patients enjoy advanced medical achievements, reduce treatment costs, and ease economic burdens, over the years, scientific research has become a widespread emulation movement among the medical staff of Nghe An Oncology Hospital.

Since its establishment (2011) up to now, Nghe An Oncology Hospital has carried out research on 342 basic-level scientific topics, including 05 provincial-level scientific topics; 5 multinational studies; 13 articles published in international journals; 121 articles published in national journals. There are 21 projects winning the Nghe An Provincial Scientific Innovation Award.

In 2014, the hospital won the Special Prize of Nghe An Province's Science and Technology Award; in 2017 and 2020, the hospital won 2 First Prizes of this competition. In 2023 alone, the hospital had 12 projects honored with the Provincial Science and Technology Innovation Award with 3 First Prizes, 1 Second Prize, 4 Third Prizes, and 4 Encouragement Prizes.

A typical individual, a pioneer in the scientific research movement, professional development at Nghe An Oncology Hospital is Meritorious Doctor, PhD, Doctor, Pham Vinh Hung (Deputy Director, Chairman of the Trade Union of Nghe An Oncology Hospital). He is the owner of many valuable initiatives in practice. From 2012 to present, he has had 21 grassroots scientific topics, 03 provincial-level topics, 19 provincial-level initiatives, 12 works winning the Nghe An Provincial Science and Technology Innovation Award and 12 articles published in National magazines. He personally has 6 award-winning works: 2 First prizes, 03 Third prizes and 1 Encouragement prize).

Dr. Pham Vinh Hung and his colleagues have participated in research and implemented a series of innovative and creative topics with high applicability in the practice of examining and treating patients such as: "Research on the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer by radiofrequency ablation (RFA) using a guided robot", "Research on the application of treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma by radiofrequency ablation".

Sharing about his motivation for research, Meritorious Doctor Pham Vinh Hung confided: “Every day witnessing the pain of patients, I just thought I needed to do something to be able to share the difficulties they had to endure… From that motivation, I have continuously promoted research and applied science and technology to medical examination and treatment.”

The research of Meritorious Doctor Pham Vinh Hung is highly effective and has many social meanings. For example, the scientific topic "Research on the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer by radiofrequency ablation (RFA) using a guided robot".

In the treatment of lung cancer, surgical removal of the lung tumor with lymph node dissection combined with chemotherapy or radiotherapy is considered the best treatment method. However, nearly 80% of patients are no longer able to undergo surgery, due to late stage disease detection or concomitant medical conditions or some patients refuse surgery. At this time, the optimal method is to destroy the tumor with high frequency radio wave ablation.

Up to now, there has been very little domestic research on the application of high-frequency thermal ablation in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. Nghe An Oncology Hospital is the second unit nationwide to deploy the technique and research this topic. The successful research and application of the new technique has helped reduce the size of tumors in lung cancer patients or completely disappear. Nghe An's health sector has another modern "weapon" in cancer prevention.

Union leader

As a union leader in his unit, Meritorious Doctor Pham Vinh Hung is not only a role model and leader in the field of scientific research, but he is also someone who constantly ponders and has good ways to promote this movement to become widespread.

Accordingly, every year, the Hospital Scientific Council holds meetings to review the registered topic outlines; assign tasks to council members to help the topics complete the research and apply them to the practice of medical examination and treatment. At the same time, it guides the hospital union members to research topics that are suitable to the actual conditions and the need for innovation in each field of medical examination and treatment.

After the Scientific Council deployed its tasks, Meritorious Physician, Doctor Pham Vinh Hung held a meeting of the Union Executive Committee, organized the launching, propaganda, and implementation of emulation contents in a practical manner and brought research and innovation activities into depth.

Accordingly, the hospital union has coordinated with departments in the hospital to deploy an action program on creative labor and scientific research to the department unions and each union member; guiding the organization to implement the emulation movement in a scientific manner, suitable to the situation and tasks of the unit. The hospital union mobilizes union members to participate in scientific research movement activities actively, regularly and continuously, creating a vibrant atmosphere, demonstrating self-awareness, unanimous determination to implement and must bring specific values.

Through the results of the movement, the hospital's Trade Union promptly commended and praised outstanding collectives and individuals in effective innovation and creativity; coordinated with units to support union members in registering to implement topics, participating in innovation competitions organized by all levels, registering for awards on scientific research, creative labor, initiatives, improvements, technical solutions, etc.

Meritorious Doctor Pham Vinh Hung shared: The hospital currently has 34 departmental unions, with more than 1,000 union members. The union members are all highly qualified and capable people. The problem is to arouse their creativity for the sake of patients. Therefore, the Hospital Union Executive Committee regularly encourages and motivates union members to seriously and actively research scientific topics to apply to medical examination and treatment.

In his position, Doctor, Meritorious Physician Pham Vinh Hung always strives to find ways to improve the material and spiritual life of union members and workers. Understanding the hardships and pressures of the medical sector, he has recommended to the Party Committee and the Hospital Board of Directors to focus on taking care of the lives of union members and workers such as supporting tuition fees, house rent and transportation for staff, doctors and nurses when they go to study and do research; buying life insurance; paying extra salary, holidays, Tet, visiting and encouraging staff when their families have funerals, weddings, or illnesses; encouraging staff so that they can work with peace of mind.

To contribute to building a team of skilled, compassionate and dedicated human resources to serve patients, Doctor, Meritorious Physician Pham Vinh Hung and the Executive Board of the Trade Union organize professional competitions to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment and communication and behavioral skills for medical staff...

With his great contributions and dedication to the cause of building and developing Nghe An Oncology Hospital in particular and the health sector in general, Meritorious Doctor Pham Vinh Hung was honored to receive Certificates of Merit from the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Health, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, the Provincial People's Committee, and the Nghe An Provincial Labor Federation; for many consecutive years, he was awarded the Certificate of Creative Labor and the title of Emulation Fighter at the grassroots and provincial levels, and in 2023, he was awarded the title of National Emulation Fighter.
