The births of a lifetime

In 2006, a pregnant woman in Na Luc village (Nhon Mai) gave birth at home and the placenta stuck to her abdomen. After 3 hours, the family members discussed pulling the placenta out, causing it to break inside the abdomen. When Dr. Tua arrived, the woman's uterus had contracted and her abdomen was distended.

It took a whole day to get to the district hospital. The patient was in critical condition so Dr. Tua decided to reach in and remove the entire placenta. After 15 minutes, the mother began to return to normal. Now the baby is 10 years old, the whole family visits the doctor regularly.

Another time, he went to Na Hi (Nhon Mai) to treat a difficult birth. At around 3am, the mother's family came to him in a panic to "call for help". The mother was in labor all night but could not give birth and fell into a coma. Doctor Tua rushed to the mother's house and, after examination, determined that the fetus was in breech position.

Mr. Tua calmly put his hand in to turn the fetus and slowly pulled it out. At 7am, when he was sure that the mother and baby were safe, he left the mother’s house and returned to the clinic to prepare for a new working day.

Rare story of reattaching a severed arm

In 2007, a young man in Huoi Co (Nhon Mai) went hunting with a homemade gun. The gun accidentally "blew" the entire part from the elbow down, leaving it dangling with a bit of skin. Doctor Tua re-treated the victim's arm and mobilized his family to take him to the district hospital. The victim's family did not agree, saying "if we can't cure him, we'll just have to stay home and wait for him to die because we don't have any money left, not even a cow or buffalo."

Determining that the patient would be in danger if he delayed, Dr. Tua decided to amputate the elbow to avoid gangrene of the entire arm. He cleaned the injured part, used absorbable sutures to suture the artery and vein, and then sewed the skin back together.

He stayed for a week to take care of the patient. Every day, he gave him high doses of antibiotics and intravenous fluids. After 3 months, the patient got better, and the wound had healed. Now the patient can still hold things normally, but cannot bend or extend his arm.

What is special is that Dr. Tua has never taken any money from his patients because "in this highland area, everyone is equally poor." This doctor is also trusted by people from all over the region for a rather interesting reason: he is fluent in all four "foreign languages" - Kinh, Mong, Thai, and Kho Mu.
