Ryan Boarman, in his 20s, was taken to a hospital in western Bali after being attacked by a shark while surfing. Dr Ni Gusti Ayu Made Sri Pujarini, who treated Boarman at the hospital, said he was conscious when he arrived.

Pujarini also said Boarman underwent emergency surgery before being transferred to a larger hospital in Denpasar, central Bali.“Boarman said he saw a 2-meter-long shark just before he felt the pain,” Dr Pujarini toldAFP. “The wound on the arm was indeed from a shark bite, visible through the teeth marks.”

Twiggy Van Ryan, an Australian witness to the incident, described the scene after the attack. “The wound was quite severe and deep, about 10cm long, on both sides of the elbow as if it had been in the shark’s mouth. The bite was made worse by the shark pulling the arm back with its teeth,” he said. Ryan also helped bandage Boarman and took him to hospital.

Bali Beach is a world-famous surfing spot. Between 2010 and 2012, Bali recorded at least four cases of foreigners being attacked by sharks on this popular tourist beach.
