After serving a 6-month prison sentence, Sy reoffended. According to the case file, on July 26, 2022, Sy was asked by a man named Tran Van Tai (residing in Vo Liet commune, Thanh Chuong district) to go to Da Cuc stream area, Thanh Thuy commune to "pick up goods". Tai promised to pay Sy from 5 to 7 million VND.
Early the next morning, Sy received Tai’s order to go get the “goods” so he took the bag of money that Tai had given him earlier. After many hours of waiting, Sy saw a man delivering a black bag of goods so he accepted it and brought it home.
At around 10am on July 29, on the way to deliver drugs to Tai, Sy was stopped by the police for a motorbike inspection. At this time, Sy abandoned his motorbike and ran up the acacia hill but was arrested by the police. Checking the inside of the plastic bag, the police discovered more than 1.1kg of drugs.
Based on Sy's testimony, the police ordered Tai to be detained in an emergency. At the investigation agency, Tai confessed that he asked Sy to buy a golden turtle from a Laotian but was unsuccessful. Tai did not admit to hiring Sy to receive the drugs.
At the trial, defendant Sy did not admit to the crime. The defendant stated that he only helped Tai “get the goods” and did not know what was inside. Only when he was caught red-handed did he realize it was drugs.
The panel of judges determined that although the defendant did not admit to the crime, based on the collected investigation documents, the minutes of the crime scene examination... it was affirmed that the prosecution of the defendant for the crime of Illegal transportation of narcotics was the right person, the right crime.
In this case, the defendant has no mitigating circumstances. The defendant has an aggravating circumstance of being a recidivist, so the panel sentenced Nguyen Dinh Sy to life in prison for the crime of Illegally transporting narcotics.
