Mentioning Nguyen Dinh Chien, born in 1991, almost everyone in Nam Phuc commune (Nam Dan district) knows him because of his very unusual lifestyle. He sleeps during the day and stays awake at night. In the afternoons, Chien rides his motorbike everywhere, his red and black hair flying wildly in the wind. Chien's friends are just as wild and carefree as he is. From one neighborhood to the other, they gather in groups of five or six to go for walks, flirt with girls, and hang out at cafes and restaurants.

Due to his extravagant lifestyle and lack of money, Chien resorted to theft. Knowing that a villager had a newly purchased mobile phone worth over 3 million VND, Chien sneaked into the house, stole it, and quickly fled. His crime was discovered by villagers, who reported it to the police. During questioning, Chien admitted to stealing the phone from his neighbor, offered to return the property to the victim, and hoped for an administrative penalty. However, according to the provisions of the Criminal Code, the Nam Dan District Police Department recommended prosecuting Chien for the crime of "Theft of Property."

After completing the case file, the family applied for bail for Chien to be released pending trial. At the first-instance trial, the panel of judges sentenced Nguyen Dinh Chien to 6 months in prison for "theft of property". After the first-instance verdict, Nguyen Dinh Chien appealed, requesting a suspended sentence. At the appellate court on August 14, 2013, considering the defendant's good character, no prior criminal record, and remorse; moreover, because he committed the crime for the first time due to a reckless lifestyle, and to give Chien an opportunity to correct his mistakes, the appellate court sentenced Nguyen Dinh Chien to 6 months in prison, with a suspended sentence. The probation period in his local area was 12 months.

The presiding judge of the criminal appeals court warned and reminded defendant Nguyen Dinh Chien that he should not seek a suspended sentence to continue his extravagant lifestyle and re-offend. If, during the probationary period in his locality, he commits another crime, the previous six months of suspended sentence will be added to the sentence for the subsequent crime. Therefore, during the 12-month probationary period, he must inform the local authorities if he travels far from home. Furthermore, if granted a suspended sentence, he should learn from it and not indulge in reckless behavior; and he should also cut off his half-black, half-red hair to live a righteous life and focus on honest work!
